Asbestos

Asbestos is a group of mineral fibers that combine high tensile strength with flexibility and chemical and heat resistance. These properties are highly attractive to industry, and, before the dangers of asbestos exposure were known, the mineral was used in thousands of commercial or household products, It was even known as the 'magic mineral'.

The term 'asbestos' itself derives from a Greek word which has the meaning 'indestructible' or 'unquenchable'.

It's use is not new - around 2500 BC it was used to make pottery in Finland. In the fourth or fifth century BC asbestos was used in the wick of a golden lamp dedicated to the goddess Athena. At that time asbestos cloth was used during cremation to hold the ashes of the dead. The Emperor Charlemagne reportedly had a tablecloth made of asbestos which he used to astound his guests: at the end of a feast the tablecloth and all its contents would be thrown into a fire - to the amazement of all the tablecloth remained undamaged. There is a further report by Marco Polo in 1250 of an asbestos cloth belonging to the Great Khan in the northern provinces of China.

Modern use of asbestos, on a limited scale, began after relatively large deposits were discovered in Western Russia in the Ural Mountains, around 1720. Factories started to appear, manufacturing asbestos products.
